Waterbury Clock Co. Cottage Extra, 30-hr. Time and Strike clock, circa
1890
This is a Waterbury Cottage Extra shelf clock with a 30-hour spring powered
brass movement. The Cottage Extra is shown in the 1891 Waterbury catalogue
but other examples were found with dates in the 1880's. The clock appears to
all original and has a full label. The dial has minor paint loss and moderate
crazing. A second label in the bottom of the clock gives the following setting
instructions:
This Clock can be set backward or forward at will without injury It can be made
to strike to correspond with the position of the hands By carrying the minute
hand forward to the figure II, then backward To the figure VII and back and forth
between these figures until the Right hour is struck always waiting for the Clock
to strike when the Minute hand comes to the figure XII.
Interesting because the clock also has a strike advance wire but no mention was
made in the instructions. Perhaps that was added later.
This clock is very old and had significant wear throughout. An oversize time side
main spring had been installed, probably years ago, and the excessive force
combined with badly worn main wheel pivot holes caused damaged teeth on the T1 and
T2 wheels. The spring was replaced with a proper spring and bushings installed in
the pivot holes. T1 & T2 may require replacement at some point.
