Self Winding Clock Co., Naval Observatory Time, Western Union gallery clock, ca.
1920
This is what remains of a Self Winding Clock Co. gallery clock that could
synchronize to Western Union "naval Observatory Time". It was originally
powered by a pair of No.6 dry cell batteries. The clock movement was a mechanical
movement with a pendulum that was wound automatically by power from the batteries.
Sadly, almost all or the original movement is missing and in its place was found a
non-working modern quartz movement. The clock has a special meaning for the owner
because it once hung in the office where she worked. However she was not interested
in locating an original replacement movement or the expense of a proper
restoration. The defective quartz movement was replaced with a "set and
forget" quartz movement that auto corrects for daylight time as due to the
mounting it is inconvenient to get at the time set knob. The owner is happy to at
least have a cherished timepiece that again tells time.
