Waterbury Yates Kitchen (gingerbread)
Clock with alarm, circa 1890?
8-day brass & steel movement, strikes on the hour
and half-hour. This clock was obtained from a very good
friend in 1967 without the alarm although screw holes were there from the original alarm. Original label is gone. Case was
refinished and the paper dial replaced in 1967.
Movement is signed "Waterbury Clock Co. USA"
and has steel plates with brass bushings and was with the clock when received but may or may
not be original to this case. An alarm unit believed to be Waterbury was obtained and installed along with a brass plated alarm bell in March 2017. The clock movement and alarm have steel plates that were originally brass plated.
The movement was first serviced in 1967 then in 2010 the main springs were replaced, an improper click was replaced, and a number of bushings installed. The steel plates have large original brass plugs at the pivot holes. these were left in place and bushed with brass clock bushings. Note that many of the pivots are not centered in the brass plugs. This is original and typical of Waterbury steel plate movements and should not be altered. I run this clock all the time and it is a good timekeeper.
Thanks to
Wayne from Winnipeg Manitoba who recognized this model
as a Yates. I had been searching for the model
name for 39 years! The clock is in running order and is
in daily use.
