Western Clock Co., Spur luminous dial alarm clock, 1948
Westclox brand square alarm clock with black face and luminous dial made by Western
Clock Co. The movement is dated 05 48. I purchased this clock on e-Bay April
15, 2012 for $9.99. The seller stated, Great Shape Westclox Alarm Clock great
working cond, which was a considerable stretch as the alarm side click and
spring were missing and the movement was filthy and would only run intermittently.
Still, the price was right and the main reason for buying was that my dad had one
just like it when I was a kid.
I cleaned the movement and fabricated a replacement alarm side click, replaced the
time side main spring (Merritt's part # MS268 cut down to 30 inches long and
made into a hole end spring), and cleaned up the case. The clock seems to now be a
strong runner. The luminous dial still glows but I'm not sure if it is Radium
or a later luminous paint. I believe it may be the latter because it glows brightly
immediately after exposure to light and my Radium dial Big Ben does not respond
this way. This clock joins a few other alarm clocks already in my collection.
