[below] The clock & movement "as received"
|
E. N. Welch Victorian "Parlor Clock", circa 1890?
Acquired at an estate auction May 12 2008. The clock is a typical American walnut shelf or parlor clock. The style and type of construction suggest that it may have been made around 1890. I have not yet identified the model name. The brass 8-day time and strike movement has bolted plates, and was originally fitted with stop works, some parts of which are missing. The movement is signed E. N. Welch MFG. Co. Forrestville, Conn. The clock strikes the hour and the half on a nice sounding coiled gong which has a really massive iron base. When received the clock was missing its pendulum. The one shown is an old E. N. Welch pendulum found on ebay. I think it's appropriate for this clock. The plain door glass was with the clock but does not appear to be original. I don't know what decorations may have originally been on the glass, but with the fancy pendulum the plain glass looks nice. The hands, face, and winding key appear to be original.
The clock was quite filthy from having spent years in storage. Someone had painted the bezel and part of the case with a nasty gold paint. The case was refinished and the brass bezel stripped and polished. The dial was lightly cleaned and left in original condition. The movement was cleaned and several bushings were installed. It's a decent looking clock and runs well.
