Waterbury Clock Co., Ship's Bell No. 1, circa 1915, - Quartz Conversion
2015
This clock began life as a Waterbury jeweled movement ship's bells clock in a
heavy brass case. Unfortunately the clock case was separated from its original
movement and sold on eBay® where I purchased it in December 2014. The case was
missing the original glass but had an original porcelain enamel dial and a heavy
coiled gong.
Let me say that I do not approve of fine old clocks like this being parted out and
sold as parts. That being said, I was looking for a similar case to make a
"bathroom clock". I wanted a tightly enclosed case because of the damp
environment and had planned from the beginning to use an inexpensive quartz
movement in a brass case. Then this really nice case came up. The pictures show the
quartz movement (which does not sound the bells) and the fake winding arbors. All
of the original parts were retained so that a Waterbury mechanical ships bells
movement can be installed if one comes up at a good price. The hands are not the
correct style but what I had available. The convex glass it something from my bone
pile and the curve made room for the longer quartz movement center stack. I may
change the hands when I have occasion to reorder parts.
