E. Ingraham shelf clock with alarm, circa 1870
This is an 8-day time and strike on the hour only E. Ingraham shelf clock with
alarm, tentatively identified as one of the Venetian series. This clock was a gift
in December 2009. As received, the original movement had been replaced with a
quartz battery movement and the dial had been over pasted with a replacement label.
What is believed to be the original gong was still in the case. The alarm parts
were missing. The dark blue label identifies the clock as an E. Ingraham. The
reverse painted tablet is believed to be original and is in decent condition for
its age. The case had been previously partially refinished. The backboard has
numerous extra holes suggesting that over the past 140 years or so it has probably
housed several movements.
The battery movement was replaced with this E. Ingraham brass 8-day movement in
April 2011. This movement has brass mounting feet on he bottom and steel mountings
on the top. Although not original, I believe it is from the correct time period and
is an appropriate replacement. There is evidence that the original movement had a
wood block mount at the top. This movement was purchased on e-Bay and gone over
before installation. It has the old style wrought iron springs which are in good
condition. The click rivets were replaced, a few bushings were installed, and the
escape wheel changed from 40 teeth to 36 teeth to get the proper pendulum drop. The
alarm is unmarked but purchased on e-Bay as being an E. Ingraham. The pendulum is a
new replacement. An alarm control lever was added to the movement. The dial was
replaced with a reproduction E. Ingraham copy. The alarm dial is old but not
original. The hands are replacements but are believed to be the correct style. The
case was cleaned up and given a few coats or shellac. The clock now runs well and
will be a lasting part of my collection.
