Bulova University Of Virginia Bracket Chime Clock c. 1980
This is a non-quartz battery powered Westminster chime clock with mechanical chimes. The clock carries the Bulova brand name but the movement is labeled Rhythm Watch, Japan. The time train is regulated by a balance wheel and hairspring that is magnetically driven from 1 "D" cell. The mechanical chimes are driven by a small electric motor powered by the other "D" cell shown in the picture. There is an on-off switch for the chime function. The center of the dial has a thick metal medallion for the University of Virginia. The same clock was apparently made with other university medallions. The "real" mechanical chimes have a pleasant natural sound. This clock arrived for service with damage from a leaking battery and an issue with debris in the escapement causing a problem with the escapement ratchet.
