Seth Thomas Octagon Lever 10 inch Wall Clock, circa 1890-1900
* This is nn 8 Day "Octagon Lever" wall clock, made by the Seth Thomas
Clock Co., In Thomaston, Conn., circa 1890-1900. This clock was purchased on eBay
in December 2013. It was incorrectly described as "1878 Seth Thomas One Day
Lever Wall Or Mantlel Clock". The back is stamped in red ink, Case Design-
April 16th, 1878. While the design may date from 1878, I believe the actual
clock is probably circa 1890-1900 but I have been unable to find much about this
clock.
The case is about 10 3/8 in. wide and the face is about 8 in. wide with a brass
bezel. The movement has the Seth Thomas name and logo but is otherwise not marked
but appears to be the No. 10 time only lever movement with large double main
springs which is usually described as an 8-day clock. The paper dial Is somewhat
distressed but appears to be original, not sure about the class. The The veneered
(Rosewood?) wooden case is sound but there is some minor veneer chipping. I believe
the time hands are original but the seconds bit is from a Westclox Big Ben alarm
clock. The full back lable is mostly there but has remnants of having been over
pasted with a lable from the Weule Company. The original lable appears to have been
made by Seth Thomas for A.S. Hotchkiss Tower Clocks. March 1926 is written in ink
and is likely the date when someone acquired the clock or when it was
serviced.
The case was filthy but cleaned up fairly well. The dial pan was reattached to the
silvered brass mounting ring. The movement was disassembled and cleaned and a few
pivot bushings installed. The T2 wheel was turned over because over the past 100+
years the power from the heavy double springs had caused considerable wear to the
tooth faces. Otherwise the movement was in good condition. It runs strong and keeps
good time. This is definitely a movement where one will appreciate a wide wing key
as considerable force is required to wind the springs.
