Seth Thomas Corsair-W Ships Bells Clock, 1979
This is a small (5 1/4" diameter) Seth Thomas Corsair-W single hammer
"ship's bells" clock with a platform escapement. Like most clocks of
this type it strikes ship's watch bells instead of the hour count. Ironically
the sounding device is not a bell at all in this model but a heavy coiled gong. The
movement is German and made for Seth Thomas. The Seth Thomas movement number is
A207-000 CC, which is essentially a Hermle 132-071. This version has eight segments
on the "snail" for each watch and a cam that arrests the hammer at 15
minutes before the hour when the strike train is released but the strike is not
heard. This allows the strike on the hour to begin with a pair of bells. I believe
that in later versions the snail had fewer segments and a different method was used
to begin each hour count with a pair of bells.
This clock came in for a minor adjustment and is running fine now. Many clock
movements made by Hermle during this time period had plated pivots which typically
begin to fail after about 25 to 30 years, so I don't know how much more life it
has, but for the time being it is an attractive little clock with a pleasant strike
sound.
