Seth Thomas 8-day Wooden Works Paw-foot Column and Splat Shelf Clock, circa
1825-30
This is a nice Seth Thomas double decker 8-day wooden works "paw-foot"
column and splat shelf clock. Probably made around 1825 to 1830. It strikes the
hours only on an iron bell. The label is missing but the case has not been
refinished and is in pretty good condition. The clock had been in storage in a
cardboard box that was too small and apparently stood upside down so the top of the
splat was somewhat flattened. At some point modern screws were installed to hold
the dial, which appears to be original. The weight pulleys are also earlier
incorrect replacement but were left as found. The mirror appears to be old and
someone has placed a wooden backing behind it that does not look original. The paw
feet are in fine condition.
The movement required several pivot replacements and several split wooden arbor
repairs. The movement was bushed with Delrin-AF bushings. This movement originally
had the hour hand keyed onto a square-end hour pipe. The square end is missing and
what may be the original hand fitted with a brass mounting sleeve which was not
replaced. The clock has a slip clutch on both the hour and minute hands, as other
early Seth Thomas movements did. The movement does not at first appear much
different from a 30-hour ST wooden movement but on closer inspection one will see
that the movement is a bit larger, has much thicker and larger main wheels, wider
cord spools, and somewhat different tooth counts. Notice the fine toothed escape
wheel. (The rubber band seen in the last picture is to hole the wheels in sync
during assembly only.) The clock runs very strong using the original 10 pound iron
weights.
