Seth Thomas "Round Band" Miniature Shelf Clock, circa 1867
This little Seth Thomas clock is about 16½ inches tall and is similar to the
miniature OG and OOG clocks from this period but is properly called a "Round
Band". It was acquired from a local estate auction without a movement February
17, 2009. A correct 30 hour spring powered movement was purchased on eBay in
February 2015 after a 6-year search. The movement had severe rust damage, an
incorrect motion works wheel and pinion, and a missing hammer return spring and
required much work. This movement has a somewhat unusual strike counting setup.
There is a pin wheel with pegs at various spacings to lift a lever and stop the
striking instead of the usual count wheel with slots.
Several splinters of veneer were missing. These spaces were filled and painted to
create a faux wood-grain. The case appeared to have been refinished before, so it
was sanded and given a few coats of shellac, except the door. Everything was rubbed
lightly with 0000 steel wool and waxed. The face has significant paint loss but was
left as is. An unusual feature of this clock is that the the dial (and the
movement) are asymmetrical with regard to the location of the winding arbors - the
left hand winder being more distant from the center than the right hand winder. The
dial has lettering around the center opening, "PATENTED MAY 19, 1863"
(barely visible), but the label gives the Seth Thomas address as Thomaston, Conn.,
which dates the clock sometime after 1865. I believe the case, tablet, face, and
label are original. The pendulum bob and hands are not original. The bob is old but
the hands are reproduction Seth Thomas "S" & "T" hands. The
gong is salvaged from an old New Haven OG and has a decent sound.
This has been a long project but the clock is now running and a part of my
collection September 2015.
