Seth Thomas Brookfield 2 Banjo clock, circa 1941
8-day American made Seth Thomas 1120 J brass
movement stamped 11 41, which I believe is Nov. 1941. This movement is a little unusual in that the springs are contained in a pair of stationary "spring boxes", and cut pinions are used on the second wheels while lantern pinions are used in the rest of the train. It has what passes for a deadbeat escapement but seems to operate with a little recoil more like a half-deadbeat. The 1120 J movement appears to be a variation of 120 movement modified for a long drop pendulum. The clock seems to be a strong runner and strikes the hour and half-hour on a single tone rod. The case is 29 inches tall, 9½ inches wide, and has a 5 inch dial. This clock was
obtained from a local estate auction on Nov. 20, 2006. I believe
the Brookfield design was made from about 1938 on into the early 1950's with this one having been made around 1941. Later models had a German movement and a clear window in the lower glass to allow the pendulum to be seen. Other than the pendulum bob and a few previously installed bushings, the clock appears to be all original. There are some scratches on the face.
The clock was running and striking properly as received, after the addition of a suitable replacement pendulum. I serviced the movement on November 16, 2008 and discovered several improperly installed bushings which were replaced or refitted. I run this clock daily and it is an excellent time keeper.
