Sheffield Miniature Grandfather Clock, 1947
This is a miniature tall case or "grandfather" clock. It stands about 21
inches tall and is surprisingly attractive and well made for a novelty clock.
Manufactured in 1947, the clock originally had a 120 volt AC electric movement that
also powered the pendulum back and forth in a rather artificial looking swing.
Notes inside the case indicate that the clock was repaired in 1956, and refurbished
in 1965. I acquired it at a local estate auction in January 2008. The clock has its
original bakelite dial labeled Sheffield, there are no other labels. The
original mechanical gear train along with what appears to be a replacement electric
motor was in the clock. The motor runs, but the gear train is not usable. A modern
quartz pendulum movement was installed using the original pendulum. The original
mechanism and hands have been retained, but considering the value of the clock, the
added safety and convenience of the quartz movement, and the more natural looking
motion of the pendulum, I believe the marriage of old and new is justified.
It's not really an antique, it's not especially valuable, it's not at
all like the rest of my collection, it's kind of cute and I like it, but I need
the space for a real antique.
