Seth Thomas Severn alarm clock, 1948
One-day Seth Thomas Severn alarm in wood with brass trim. The movement has a
June 1948 date and the case has a December 1948 date. These clocks reportedly use
the same movement as the Westclox Baby Ben alarm clock and were made from the 1930s
into the 1950s. The movement is held in the case by a single large snap ring and is
designed such that the same movement could easily be installed in several different
case styles. This case is about 3½ in. square and the dial is about 2½
in. including the brass trim.
I purchased the clock from an eBay seller in January 2009 for $1.99. It was
basically a "basket case" held together with tape (see last picture).
Although the movement itself has very little wear, the clock had obviously had a
hard life. I normally don't collect or repair small alarm clocks, but this one
caught my attention because of it's name - Severn. My dad's name was
also Severn, so I said I need one of these for my collection, and the price was
extremely "right", so here it is! After a cleaning and oiling it's
running just fine.
