Sessions Dawson Mantel Clock, circa 1914.
This little Sessions mantel clock has been identified as the Dawson and was listed
in the 1914 Sessions catalog. I acquired this clock in December 2012 as part of a
swap deal. It has a nice porcelain enamel dial and a very pleasant sounding
cathedral gong. The 8-day brass movement ran strong but needed cleaning. The clock
strikes the hour on the cathedral gong and the half hour on a bell. Close
inspection revealed a number of previously installed bushings that were in good
condition and left as found. Someone removed the original finish and one of the
brass colored feet was missing and another was missing a piece. The minute hand was
missing and the hour hand had an awful black paint job. The clock appears to have
the original Sessions pendulum suspension but the original bob was not included.
The back door is an obvious replacement but is neat and functional. The original
back cover on this model was a separate piece that was not attached to the clock
and was obviously lost. The wooden parts of the case have a number of dings that
were left as a testament to the hard times it must have been through at some
point.
The case was smoothed up a bit and given some fresh shellac, the brass was
polished, the movement disassembled and cleaned, and new hands fitted. The broken
"brass" foot was repaired and a replacement was cast from resin for the
missing one. All the feet were sprayed with gold metallic paint. Overall this is an
attractive little clock that is pleasant to have around even it the case has a few
imperfections.
