Sessions Regulator "E", Circa 1910..
This Sessions Regulator "E" time piece is typical of the style commonly referred to as Store Regulators, although they lacked most of the attributes of true regulators. These were simple, reliable, spring-powered time pieces [a clock that does not strike is "time piece"] that were found in many businesses, stores, and shops. Many had product advertising on the class tablet, as does this one. I acquired it on December 11, 2006 from Nelson Auction Gallery, Trappe, Md., the time piece came from Mills Antiques, Cambridge Md., presumably when they went out of business. It may have belonged a local area shop. Nothing else is known about the clock’s history. This model has the popular "star" pattern pressed into the oak door frame. Original 8-day spring-powered time only movement. This model was also available with a calendar dial. The label on the back of the case reads, "Sessions Clock Co. Regulator E". As received, the case had three layers of paint over the original finish - brown over yellow over bright green. One small piece was broken off of the bottom shelf decoration. Several mud-wasps had built homes in the top of the case. The clock was otherwise in pretty good condition and retains what I believe to be the original pendulum, glass, tablet, and winding key.
The case was disassembled, stripped of all the nasty colored paint, and refinished as I believe it should look. The movement was disassembled, cleaned, bushed and repaired as needed. The hands and face were left as received except for cleaning. A small crack at the edge of the tablet was repaired. There are a few old "touched up" places on the tablet which reflect part of this clock's life history, so they were left as is. Likewise, there is a slightly burned area about 2" in diameter under the bottom shelf where a careless person may have placed an oil lamp too close. This lovely old clock is a part of my permanent collection.
