Rolens Watch Ind. Co. Ltd. 31-day Striking Wall Clock, late 20th c.

This is a 31-day wall time and strike wall clock made by Rolens Watch Ind. Co. Ltd., 310-15,Sangsu-dong Mapo-gu,Seoul 121-829, Korea, Republic of (South Korea). On-line information indicates that Rolens was established in 1975 and has less than 50 employees. "ROLENS WATCH IND.CO.,LTD. IS ONE OF THE LEADING WATCH MANUFACTURERS AND EXPORTERS IN KOREA. IT EXPORTS ITS SOPHISTICATED PRODUCTS TO JAPAN, THE MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA MAINLY". I found nothing to indicate if Rolens made the movement in this clock or just had their name put on a movement from another maker.

The clock is about 28 in. tall and 11½ in. wide. The movement has what passes as a deadbeat escapement and is typical of modern mass-produced spring-powered movements. The striking is controlled by a conventional rack and snail system. Despite the rumors about Korean clock quality, the clock appears to be fairly well made. The parts of the case are especially well fitted, although made from inexpensive materials. I obtained the clock at a local estate auction on June 16, 2008. The clock was in running order and continues to run and strike quite nicely. Because I usually don't collect "modern" clocks and need the space, this clock will probably be offered for sale after I run it a few weeks to make sure all is well.
