Seth Thomas "Rival" Adamantine mantel clock, circa 1918
Acquired at an estate auction July 2007. The clock was running as received, but
needed cleaning and a few pivot hole bushing. The original label is missing, but
there is a jeweler's label and some meaningless (to me ) numbers scratched on
the movement and the back door. The Eight-day Seth Thomas movement has the Seth
Thomas maker's stamp on the brass plate. Strikes on a coiled gong in the bottom
of the case.
Brass "89" movement has a solid back plate and half-deadbeat escapement.
Beautiful adamantine case has had a number of chips touched up, but still makes a
nice presentation. 5 inch dial is painted on metal. The movement has been
disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and bushings installed as needed. I believe the
hands are replacements. One spring looks like a replacement. Not sure about the
pendulum bob. Overall a decent little 90-year old clock with a few finish blemishes
and a great running movement.
