Riley Whiting Column & Splat Looking
Glass Clock, circa 1830's.
Wooden 30 hour weight driven movement. Strikes
the hours only on a iron bell. The clock stands
35 inches tall. Purchased in an eBay auction on
March 15, 2006 from a seller in Chester N.J. Only
a small portion of the original label is left, so
the maker's name is not visible. The name of
the label printer is P Canfield Printer,
Hartford. Below is a picture of the label
fragments overlaid on a Riley Whiting label and
except for minor differences the labels are
essentially the same. The movement is uniquely
Riley Whiting, and so must be the clock if the
movement is original. The brass bushing shown in
the escape wheel bridge is not original and has
since been replaced with a less conspicuous
Delrin-AF bushing which has a natural
brown color. Several worn pivot holes and the
cable pulleys have also now been bushed with
Delrin-AF bushings which seem to work very well
and require no oil. The stenciled half-columns
are mounted on the door and the key is inserted
in a lock on the right side of the case. If you
have one like this, I would love to hear from
you.
The upper glass is very old (see 2nd. photo) and
held in with putty. The mirror is a modern
replacement. The dial is original and painted on
wood. The weights and pendulum are old and
probably original. Not sure, but the splat may be
a replacement. The minute hand is obviously too
small and I plan to make a replacement when I get
around to it. Clock is in running order and keeps
excellent time. I run this clock daily. [updated
