Eveready Night Projection "Brothel" Clock, circa 1910-20
??
This is a vintage projection clock, sometimes called a "brothel clock",
possibly Eveready brand. It has a small windup movement, possibly by
Junghans. When the button is pressed, the face is illuminated by two small
battery powered lamps, and the mirror and lens project an image of the clock face
onto the ceiling. Probably intended for use in the bedroom before electric lights were common, one can only imagine how they acquired their unusual "nickname" or how often they were used in such establishments. The lens is mounted in a threaded housing to facilitate focusing
the image. The projection lens and mirror can be removed for direct viewing day or night. A battery is fitted inside the base. The clock uses a #734 Eveready
Tungsten Battery and 4V bulbs.
This clock recently underwent an electrical restoration in my shop. A previous
owner had replaced the lamps with 1.5 volt lamps and some sort of "wired
up" battery. I was able to obtain good pictures of the original battery from a
NAWCC member, and was able to make a "fake" battery (see pictures). We
opted to keep the 1.5 volt lamps, so the "new battery" was powered by a
pair of AA cells wired in parallel. The wooden fake was pasted with a label derived
from the photograph of an original Eveready #734. The battery connects using the
original contacts.
