New Haven 30-Hour OG Shelf Clock, circa 1870's.
Typical American OG style clock by New Haven Ckock Co., probably from the 1870s. It
has a 30-hour weight powered time and strike brass movement. It strikes the hour
only. I acquired this clock at a local estate auction on May 11, 2009. The original
label is present but has some damage. The dial appears to be original but has some
paint loss. The hands are old and could be original, I'm just not sure. I
believe that the reverse painted tablet is original but almost all of the
background color has been removed. The pendulum and weights are old and could also
be original. I believe the movement is probably original to this clock. The
backboard retains its old cut nails, but there is a "knot hole" in the
backboard (see picture).
The case appears to have been previously refinished and although it looks
"decent", close examination will reveal a less than perfect job. The
veneer is missing from the sides of the case and the previous owner did a somewhat
mediocre job of grain painting the base wood.
The movement has been cleaned and bushings in stalled as needed. An incorrect
strike governor fan was replaced with a proper one fabricated in my shop. New
stainless steel axles were fitted to both weight pulleys. The lantern pinion
trundles have some wear but the clock seems to be a strong runner. (I replaced the
worn trundles in the strike fan lantern pinion.) I have an almost identical New
Haven, and several other OGs, so this one is for sale.
