Back plate has a separately mounted brass strike control
lever. The lever is retained by a small brass collar pressed over the tapered end
of the post that holds the control lever. The design is typical New Haven but the
later models that I have seen typically have steel levers retained by a washer
and lock wire.
Large New Haven Banjo Clock, circa early 20th c.
This is a large New Haven 8-day banjo clock. It has a New Haven 8-day spring
powered time and strike movement that strikes the hours and the half-hours on a
coiled gone. The pendulum bob is brass faced over cast iron and has a short wooden
stick. The pendulum is old and probably original to the clock. The 8-inch dial is
silvered and has a few minor scratches. Both glasses are replacements but appear to
be similar in style to that seen in other New Haven banjo clocks. As shown, the
clock is about 39 inches tall. I suspect that the finial may be a replacement, so
the original height may have been a bit more.
Back plate has a separately mounted brass strike control lever that is retained by
a small brass collar pressed over the tapered end of the post that holds the
control lever. Later models typically have steel levers retained by a washer and
lock wire. This movement also has brass shield disks between the springs and main
wheels where these are more typically zinc in later models. The last picture also
shows a flat top pillar that does not extend through the front plate. The time side
main spring anchors to this pillar instead of the corner pillar. This is also
typical for some New Haven movements and presumably helps the main spring unwind
away from the rest of the movement.
I acquired this clock from a friend in November 2010 and so far I have not been
able to positively identify the model name of date. There is no label on the clock
but the New Haven name is on the dial and the movement.
