E. Ingraham & Co. Round Top Calendar Clock c.1880
Eight-day E. Ingraham & Co. Bristol, Conn. round top Calendar Clock with strike
on coiled gone. 12-inch dial, over all height 23 inches. The label has a patent
date of May 13, 1871 and the label states Movement has an improved attachment
patented Oct. 8, 1878 which admits of the hands being turned Backwards pa..[past
12] without injury to the clock. The movement is typical E. Ingraham & Co.
from this period with a count wheel that is advanced in steps by gathering pallets,
and a half-deadbeat escapement. The clock was acquired on July 30, 2012 from Nelson
Auction Gallery in Trappe, Md.
The clock appears to be all original and including the the nice finish. The dial is
darkened with age but not unattractive (the uneven color in the picture is a
reflection on the glass). The hands appear to be original and the calendar hand has
original paint. The hour and minute hand appear to be brass and are likely
original. This clock appears to have been maintained and I believe it was likely in
use up to the time of the owner's passing. The movement has had some previous
bushing work which appears sound if not especially attractive. Note the two brass
mounting feet and two steel mounting feet. The last picture shows the calendar
advance mechanism and the dead-beat escapement. The pivots and springs were oiled
and the gong hammer adjusted. A loose hinge and a loose door catch were tightened.
No other maintenance was performed at the time of this posting. The clock is
operating properly with a very lively pendulum and is keeping good time.
