Seth Thomas Milan "City clock", circa 1902
The Milan is one in the series of small cased clocks named for cities in the
Mediterranean area. The other three in the series are; Mentone,
Genoa, and Lisbon. The veneered case is only 10.25" high, with
hand carvings on the front. Approx. 3¾ inch porcelain enamel dial, thick
beveled glass, and brass bezel. Dial has a couple of hairline cracks.I believe the
hands and pendulum are original. 8 day round "count wheel" movement,
signed by Seth Thomas, half hour strike on a standing gong. "A good City
Series clock we rarely see. Ly-Seth Thomas #198" [Antique Clocks Price
Guide]
I acquired the clock at a local estate auction in December of 2007. There are a few
blemishes where someone appears to have "tacked" some loose veneer on the
front of the clock - this has now been repaired as best I could. The movement was
reasonably clean with little visible wear. The count wheel was soldered to its
arbor and is an earlier replacement. In 2018 the soldered-on count wheel was removed and fitted with proper mounting like the original and the movement was disassembled, cleaned and serviced before being sold. The clock runs and strikes perfectly and keeps very
good time.
