Seth Thomas Medbury 6W Westminster Chime Mantel Clock, 1953
This is a Seth Thomas Medbury 6W Westminster Chime Clock mantel clock made
in 1953. The Medbury was a popular model and was made for several decads.
[see also the 1973 Medbury in this gallery]
This example uses the American made Seth Thomas No. 124 spring-powered 8-day
Westminster chime movement with a short pendulum. The No, 124 movement was made
from around 1924 to 1955 with a few modifications. After 1955 Seth Thomas used
their No. 402-003 German made movements in the Medburys. The 402-005 is
essentially a Hermle 350-020 spring powered 8-day Westminster chime movement with
the infamous "floating balance".
Because the early Medburys (like this one) had a pendulum regulated
movement, they had to be run on a level surface. Later models with the German
movement had a balance wheel regulated movement that did not require a level
surface. Many of the German movements produced in the 1970s experienced premature
failure. I prefer the American No. 124 movements although one might argue that they
are a bit more difficult to service and adjust, but probably more reliable.
