Seth Thomas Medbury 6W Westminster Chime Mantel Clock, 402-005
movement, 1973
This is a Seth Thomas Medbury Westminster Chime Clock mantel clock made in
1973. At the time, Seth Thomas was a part of the General Time division of Talley
Industries Co. [see the 1953 Medbury in this gallery]
I have included it as an example of the tens of thousands of similar clocks that
were made during the last part of the twentieth century with American names and
German movements. Before about 1955 the Medbury was made with an American
made Seth Thomas No, 124 movement. The movement in this example is labeled Seth
Thomas 402-005, which is essentially a Hermle 350-020 spring powered 8-day
Westminster chime movement with the infamous "floating balance". [see
pictures below] The floating balance was discontinued a few years after this clock
was made.
Many Hermel movements from this period experience premature failure of the second
wheel pivots due to a metallurgical defect in manufacture and this clock was no
exception [see next to last picture]. The movements can be repaired and replacement
parts are currently available, including a new style balance to replace the older
floating balance. Although repairable, many shops simply replace the entire
movement with a new improved Hermel movement for not a lot more money than the cost
to repair.
