French Black Mantel clock with L. Marti Movement, circa late 1800s ?
This is an 8-day French black mantel clock. The clock has a L. Marti round count
wheel time and strike movement that strikes the hours and the half-hours on a nice
French bell. The movement is signed and has the number 1627 stamped on the plate.
The pendulum and the brass front bezel have the same number so I believe that
except for the springs the clock is all original including the original hands. The
movement as received was very dirty and had considrable rust on all the steel
parts. The pivots and pivot holes have only minor wear so only a couple bushings
were installed. The time side main spring was replaced. The recoil anchor had deep
rutting and was slippered with 0.003" polished spring steel. The slate case
seems to have some spotting from something external getting on it but does not look
too bad after some polishing. There is minor damage to the back glass door. I have
not identified this clock or attempted to date it. After servicing it seems to be a
strong runner.
