George Marsh Brass "OG" Clock, circa 1840s
This is a 30-hour "OG" clock with brass movement. It was acquired in
March 2009 from a friend who was cleaning out her barn. The clock was filthy and
obviously had not run for many years. The lower part had water damage, possibly
from sitting on a wet floor. The original face, hands, pendulum, and weights were
missing. Both glasses are old. The tablet may be original, or possibly an older
replacement. The label is almost completely gone.
The movement is a bit unusual, but not unique, in that the count wheel is on the
back plate instead of the more common front plate location. The escape wheel bridge
is in a distinctive location, and there is a curious recess in the plate for the
fly arbor pinion. With these observations, the construction detail of the case, and
the remaining fragments of the label, a NAWCC member was able to identify this
clock with near certainty as being a George Marsh. Other examples found
online date from 1835 to 1850. These examples all have wooden dials.
The movement has been completely rebuilt and runs fine with the new replacement
weights. Lose and missing veneer has been reglued or replaced. The case has been
refinished and reassembled. A replacement face was made based on a photograph from
another George Marsh OG clock. The hands are new generic OG style replacement
hands. The pendulum bob is just something from my spare parts box..
