New Haven Los Santos. Mission Oak clock.
Purchased at an estate auction Jan. 23, 2006. Clock has an 8-day brass movement
with strike on the hour and half-hour. Black oak finish. I believe this clock is
all original. Label is missing. Clock was partly disassembled when received and was
repaired and is now in running order. Made around 1904.
In my collection, this clock represents the so called "Arts and Crafts",
or "Mission Oak" period. Of all the clocks in the gallery, this one is
most likely to generate a "restrained" comment such as, "it is
different", when what they really mean to say is, "wow, that sure is an
ugly clock"! One person said it looked like a jail house clock, with the
pendulum behind the lattice bars. I think it is a wonderfully attractive period
clock, even if some don't appreciate that its true beauty lies in the plain
simple lines and, well, the absence of traditional "beauty" and
superfluous ornamentation and adornment. It was a little rebellious while I was
trying to get it regulated so I nicknamed named it the "Bad Boy" clock.
It's actually a wonderful old clock and it has a perfectly beautiful deep tone
when it strikes the flat wound gone.
