Linden Westminster Chime Mantel clock, circa 1973
This is a small Westminster Chime mantel clock, marked "made in Germany".
The name on the face is "Linden" and the movement is stamped
"Cuckoo Clock Mfg. Co." I believe that Cuckoo Clock Mfg. Co. probably
sold the clocks under the Linden name. The movement appears to be a Hermle
341-020 made for Cuckoo Clock Mfg. Co. Hermle is one of the largest makers of
contemporary chime clock movements, many of which are labeled with various other
brand names. A number "73" stamped on the movement I believe indicates a
manufacture date of 1973. A similar looking clock with a Hermle made 1051-020
multiple chime movement was also sold under the Linden name.
This clock was acquired at auction in May of 2007. The pictures show the clock more
or less as received. The clock is missing it's original pendulum, which has
been replaced with a correct new one. It has it's original (or at least the
correct) winding key, but the back door is missing. The movement has been cleaned
and bushed as necessary and is running and chiming properly. It has a very pleasant
tone and has proven to be a reliable time keeper.
Additional comments added December 10, 2009
Although this is a very common clock and by no means rare or especially valuable.
For some reason this is the most asked about clock in my Gallery. The most frequent
inquires want more information about "Cuckoo Clock Mfg. Co.", the
Linden brand, or the value of the clock. I have no additional information
about "Cuckoo Clock Mfg. Co.", but that brand name turns up on a variety
of modern and contemporary clocks. These clocks often have movements that appear to
be Hermle German movements rebranded with the Cuckoo Clock Mfg. Co. badge.
Likewise, I have no additional information about the Linden brand.
The value of any clock varies greatly depending on it's condition, how original
it is, how unique it is, and various other factors. Similar looking clocks, even of
the same brand and model, can have very different market values. One way to get a
"feel for" the market value is to search eBay® and other outlets
on-line and see what other clocks like this have sold for recently. I purchased
this clock at a local estate auction in 2007 for $8.25 in non-working condition
with the back door and pendulum missing. I repaired the movement, made a new door
and catch (what would have been about a $200 repair job). I sold the clock on eBay
$61.00! I could probably have sold the rebuilt movement alone for more than I got
for the clock. I offer this information in response to the numerous inquires only.
It is in no way intended to suggest or imply the market value of similar clocks is
the same as I paid or received for this particular clock and should not be used for
such purposes.
SOLD on eBay® $61.00
