Ansonia La France, Circa
1886.
This is a classic black cast iron mantel clock
with an eight-day brass spring powered movement.
It strikes the hour and half-hour on a coiled
gone in the bottom of the case. These were made
in several styles, with gilt or verde bronze
ornaments, faux marble trim, porcelain or paper
dial, arabic or Roman numerals, and with or
without an open escapement. Optional Ansonia urns
were mounted on some models. This one is about
11½ inches tall and 11 inches wide. Pre-1880
models were bell strike, 1886 models were changed
to gong strike.
I acquired the clock in 1967 from a good friend
after determining that it had previously been in
my family several generations earlier. It had
been painted several different colors, had a
broken spring, and the dial numbers were totally
gone. It didn't run, but it was all there!
The case was refinished, the paper dial was
replaced, and the spring repaired in 1967. The
clock movement was rebuilt in October 2007,
including the installation of 16 bronze bushings
and two new springs. I believe that everything
else except the winding key is probably original
to the clock. This was the first clock in my
collection and I run it daily.
