Chauncey Jerome / New Haven Steeple Clock, c. 1860's
This
clock was acquired in an eBay auction from a seller in Maine.
The clock was damaged in shipment and, as purchased, had many
incorrect replacement parts, including a modern German 8-day
movement. The upper glass is new, the lower glass is old, but
probably not original. The transfer stencil on the lower
glass (intended for a kitchen clock) and the pendulum are new
replacements. The face is a digital reconstruction of the
face that was with the clock when received, which was not the
original face. The gong looks old, but may not be original to
this case. The label and wooden case are original Chauncey
Jerome.
The case was repaired and refinished. Lacking the original
movement, the case was married to a just rebuilt 30-hour New
Haven movement that is believed to be from the same period
and very similar to the original except for bearing the New
Haven logo stamp. New Haven was making movements for Chauncey
Jerome about this time and after his bankruptcy, [circa
1856]. Jerome's assets were purchased by New Haven Clock
Co. which continued to make clocks under the Jerome trade
name. I believe this is therefore an appropriate
marriage.
This old clock has obviously had a very hard life. Even
though it has relatively little monetary value because of all
the substituted parts, it runs well and displays nicely, and
I run it every day.
