Chauncey Jerome Half-column shelf
clock, circa 1855
This clock was acquired in March 2006 from a good
friend in Trappe, Md. Unsigned eight-day brass
movement, hour only gone strike. Two notes found
inside indicate this clock was made in 1855,
which seems correct based on Jerome's
location at the time. The tablet is a replacement
and the columns were redone in gold leaf (correct
for this clock) by the previous owner. At least
one of the springs was an incorrect replacement,
the other possibly original but very weak. The
rest of the clock is original. The clock stands
18 inches tall and has a very large movement,
note the location of the winders outside the
chapter ring. The clock was running when received
received. Missing pieces of veneer were replaced
and the movement rebushed and the springs
replaced with what I believe to be the correct
size.
The clock was previously owned by the Unicorn
Bookshop. They added the little unicorn faux
pendulum bob and the Lion & The Unicorn
tablet. Although not original, it has been
this way for years and has become part of the
clock's provenance. It's also kind of
cute and an interesting conversation piece (and I
like it). I run this clock daily.
