Jerome & Company 1-Day EX Cottage striking alarm, circa
1850
This little "cottage clock" was acquired on March 30, 2009 at a local
estate auction. It has a 1-day spring powered brass movement with alarm. It strikes
the hour only on a very loud cast iron bell. The alarm strikes the same bell. The
case is 13" tall and 9½" wide at the base. The maker is
"Jerome & Company, New Haven, Ct.,USA". I don't have the exact
date of manufacture or when Jerome was in business under this name, but I believe
it would be around 1845 to 1855.
The clock appears to be all original except for the main springs. Both labels and
the tablet are nearly complete. There is significant recent veneer loss, probably
due to careless handling while being displayed at the auction preview. The face
also has some paint loss but is not unattractive. The alarm is complete but was
disconnected when received. The movement had significant pivot and pivot hole wear
and needed to be cleaned but was running fine and keeping time after just a little
fresh oil. The back board was loose from the case on one side and one end of the
movement mounting strip has been through-bolted to the back board.
The movement was cleaned and very pivot hole was bushed, and many of the pivots had
to be turned true. The alarm was also disassembled and cleaned and reconnected. The
pallets were deeply rutted so they had to be reground and polished. An interesting
feature of this little clock is that the count wheel and the main wheel are the
same wheel. This clock seems to be a strong running clock and, as of this writing,
the only "cottage clock" in my collection. Areas where veneer is missing
were colored so as to be less noticeable, but at least for the time being, I plan
to leave the case and dial "as is".
