E. Ingraham jambela 4-Column Black Mantel Clock, circa 1915
E. Ingraham Clock Co. is the maker of this typical black mantel clock circa 1915.
The label on the back says "Made for Nelson H. Brown, Boston, Mass" and
is stamped Jambela. The case is made of wood. The movement is an 8-day time
and strike with a passing bell on the half hour and gone strike on the hour. The
movement has a count wheel which is advanced by a pair of gathering pallets, which
was common in many Ingraham movements. The signed movement has a date stamp of July
1915 and is believed to be original to the clock. The escapement is a
half-deadbeat. The crutch and pendulum suspension and rate adjusting mechanism are
just behind the dial which makes installing the pendulum bob and setting the
"beat" a bit inconvenient requiring removal of the dial to adjust the
beat.
I acquired the clock in June 2011 at a local estate auction in non-running
condition. The movement required a number of pivot bushings and a good cleaning but
had no major defects. The black finish is showing some crazing and is probably
original. Someone painted the feet and handles with gold paint. The dial appears to
be original. The celluloid columns were warped and one had a piece broken but the
pieces were all there. The cracks and broken parts were glued back. The
imperfections are visible on close inspection, but overall the clock has a nice
"lived with" look.
