Winsted Clock Co. Jamaica black Mantel clock, circa 1890
This is an eight-day time and strike black mantel clock in a wooden case. The
movement is signed Gilbert. The label indicates that it is the Jamaica and
was manufactured by the Winsted Clock Co. According to AMERICAN CLOCKMAKERS &
WATCHMAKERS by Spittler and Baily the Winsted Clock Co. in Winsted, Conn. was in
business from 1879-1894. The Winsted Clock Co. was founded by Geo. B. Owen,
purchased by Gilbert and then dissolved. Owen was the manager of the Wm. L. Gilbert
Clock Co. from 1866 until 1914. Owen also operated a concurrent business between
1875-94, which was probably the Winsted Clock Co. I have no additional information
about this interesting little clock.
