E Ingraham Co.. Oak cabinet clock No. 13, 1898
This old clock came to my shop a few years ago for repair and has several
interesting features. Apparently nineteenth century clockmakers were already
looking for ways to reduce cost. This model has steel plates, and except for the
winding arbors, NO brass bushings! Of course the steel pivots, running steel
against steel for 100 years, were 110% worn out! The owner reported that the clock
had not run for a good many years, so it obviously wore out prematurely.
The movement has the pendulum mounted in front, just behind the dial, but there is
no front door, so it is very difficult to remove the pendulum bob. At least
Ingraham did include a fast-slow adjustment on the face.
Other interesting features include the use of half dead-beat escapement, and a bell
to sound the half-hours while a gong sounds the hours.
Evidence of previous "less than professional" repairs abound - note the
brass rod that someone soldered to one of the steel plates to prop the pivot over
in it's worn hole. Fortunately the clock was complete and, except for a
replacement paper dial, all original. After the installation of a bunch of bushings
and other typical repairs, this clock is again being enjoyed by it's elderly
owner (now deceased).
