E. Ingraham Sunset Alarm, 1942.
This Ingraham alarm has the name Sunset on the dial. It is dated 5 42 which
makes this a "war time" product. Perhaps that explains the extensive use
of steel and general lack of brass.
The frames are thin copper plated steel and the pivot holes did not have brass
bushings. The front bracket that supports the dial is riveted to the front movement
plate with the posts. Most of the pivots were badly scored and the main wheel arbor
had cut almost completely through the side of the plate. The main wheel had badly
cut the center pinion. The balance wheel and hair spring were loose in the bottom
of the case but undamaged. The movement was filthy and the pictures show the
condition of the case. The original paper dial has darkened badly but retained
because everything else seems to be original.
I originally thought that perhaps this one was so badly used and abused that it was
too far gone to save, but it was given to be by a friend, so I decided to see what
I could do with it. I spent far more time on it that it would be worth on the
market but it is now running and looking much nicer. The time side pivots were
reconditioned and the steel plates fitted with brass bushings. One main bushing was
soldered because it was so close to the edge of the plate. The worn center pinion
was shifted to contact an unworn area. This necessitated moving a couple other
wheels just a little as well. The case was refinished in gloss black enamel. The
bezel was cleaned up with steel wool and waxed. The movement was cleaned,
lubricated and put back together and is now running.
Under the crud was a date of 5 42 which just happens to be the year I was born so I
guess this one will be a keeper.
