Horolovar "Mouse Clock", circa 1940?
This clock is basically a smaller reproduction of the original 1910 Dungan &
Klump Model 4 "Mouse Clock". The original was 35¼ inches tall and
had a pendulum regulated 8-day Sessions movement. This copy is just 24½
inches tall and has an 8-day Horolovar movement with a platform balance wheel (no
pendulum). Both the original and this copy had the same basic action - the mouse
slowly makes his way up the clock, then at approximately 1 o'clock the mouse
slides down the clock striking a bell. The clock does not strike each hour. The
movement is especially well made for a novelty clock, although the overall time
keeping accuracy is limited due to the rather crude system used to drop the mouse
and initiate the start of his next trip up the clock.
A number of copies have been made of the No.4 "Mouse Clock" and this is
probably the most common. Although it is clearly a copy, it is an interesting clock
and a desirable addition to a clock collection. Estimates are that only about 2000
original Dungan & Klump Model 4s were made, making an original extremely rare.
(See the original Model No.2 Dungan & Klump Mouse Clock elsewhere in this
gallery for more information about the origan of the "Mouse
Clocks".)
