Howard Miller Daniel 620-232 chiming wall clock, circa 21st
c
This is an example of a "modern" clock with a mechanical movement. The
maker is Howard Miller, one of the few companies making clocks in the USA, which is
not strictly true since this clock has a Kieninger Westminster chime movement that
was made in Germany. The movement is nicely finished and features bronze main
bushings and a silent/chime selector and seems generally well made. The clock has a
solid wood front, sides and top and bottom, but the back is some type of fiber
board with a fake wood grain on one side. The only mounting attachment is by a hole
in the fiber board back. One would expect a clock with this weight to have a
substantial metal hanger screwed to the solid wood. The polished "brass"
bezel is really plated on a rather thin piece of aluminum from which the dial is
made. Although it looks nice today, one has to question how long it will last. The
dial is held to a plastic backing with double-stick tape. The somewhat annoying
door "latch" is a too strong magnet that makes opening the door difficult
unless the case is screwed to the wall. I believe one should expect more from a
clock that has a retail price close to a grand! On the plus side, the Kieninger
movement runs very well and the Westminster chimes have a beautiful tone.
