Wm. L. Gilbert 2207 Black Mantel Clock, circa 1900?.
This is a 6 column black mantel clock in a wooden case. 8-day time and strike
movement strikes the hours and the half on a coiled gong. As received, the clock
was missing the face, bezel, hands, and movement. One "sidearm"
decoration and one foot were broken. The finish was in poor condition but I was
able to preserve the original red faux marble, which looks quite nice. The damaged
decorative parts were repaired, and the black parts of the case refinished. A
replacement Gilbert movement was obtained on eBay, as was a replacement Gilbert
face. I uncovered evidence that some of the columns had been green but others had
not. I decided to finish them all green simply because I liked that color the best.
I have been unable to locate an all original 2207, so I have no way to know for
sure exactly what style face and movement this clock should have. Some Gilbert
black mantel clocks sounded the half hour on a small bell. The replacement parts
are Gilbert and date from about the same period and look appropriate on this clock.
The backboard and base board are original. This is a large clock and it has a
really lovely sounding gone, even though the gong is relatively small.
