Early Gilbert electric mantel clock, circa 1930's.
This in an example of an
early electric clock made by Gilbert was acquired at an estate auction in 2004 and
resold the same year. The synchronous electric motor used in this clock, (and many
others) has an open armature (see photo below). An interesting thing about these
early clock motors is that they don't self-start. After the clock is plugged
in, one must spin a little knob on the back of the clock to start the motor. If the
knob is spun in the wrong direction, the clock will run backward! Of course the
clock would stop every time the power went off, which was a real nuisance.
