Gilbert Clock Co. Normandy Chime Mantel Clock, circa 1920
This tambour style mantel clock was made by the Gilbert Clock Co. circa early 1920's. It has an 8-day spring powered movement and strikes the hour and half hour with what Gilbert called "Normandy Chime", more commonly known as Bim-Bam. The signed movement has the number 25 on the back plate and the number 341 on the front. The strike/chime hammers and lifting mechanisms are located on the back plate. Time regulation is by Gilbert's patterned in 1920 regulator controlled by a key from the front face of the clock. The movement was serviced in December 2017 when bushings were installed and everything cleaned and adjusted. An unusual feature of this early Gilbert movement is the flat brass springs assisting the strike control levers. This is a strong running clock with a nice strike sound on two long tone rods in the bottom of the case.
The case has a few blemishes and was obviously refinished at some time in the past and was not especially well done. The back door is warped and the finish does not match the rest of the clock but it does close and latch. The case was cleaned up and smoothed up a little but no effort was made to restore the case. The dial has made in USA but does not have the maker's name, still, I believe the case and movement are likely original.
This clock came from an anonymous owner and is being donated to the local United Methodist Church thrift shop and is Not for sale on-line
