Wm. L. Gilbert Tambour Mantel Clock, circa 1925
This rather ordinary looking Wm. L. Gilbert mantel clock was acquired at an estate
auction and added to the gallery in February 2009. Positive identification has not
been made but the case seems to be the same as the Gilbert Tambour No. 1028. There
is a number 1149 stamped into the wooden case. I don't know if this is a serial
number, model number, or date code. Gilbert was manufacturing this style clock
around 1925 but the Tambour style cases were popular even into the 1940's and
continue into modern reproductions. It has a typical Gilbert 8-day time and strike
brass movement and strikes on a single tone rod. The same movement was often fitted
with two strike hammers and two tone rods producing what Gilvert termed Normandy
Chimes, more commonly called bim-bam. This example is perhaps the reduced cost
version with a single tone strike. The movement was serviced in 2009 and runs well
but I only occasionally wind it as it is kept on a high shelf.
Reasonable offers considered.
