Gilbert Walnut Shelf Shelf Clock, circa 1870s?
This is a nice little 30-hour time and strike Walnut shelf clock. It strikes the hours only on a nickel-plated bell. The case has been refinished (shellac and wax). The pendulum is old but not original to this clock. I believe everything else is original. I don't know the model name, but a NAWCC member identified the movement as being the same as used in a Gilbert cottage clock, and the glass pattern as the same as used in a similar Gilbert clock. I can only guess at a date but there are a couple of clues: 1) it is NOT a "turn-back" movement, which was typical of clocks made before and during the 1870s. 2) it has bolted plates which are more typical of clocks made after the 1870s, however there are exceptions to the rule. The label is completely gone.
This was one of over a hundred clocks in a local estate auction in April 2008. This clock was rather insignificant among the other "more desirable" clocks, and no one really seemed to want it. It was rather distressed looking, but it appealed to me so I got it. The movement has been restored and the clock is in fine running condition.
