French Marble & Slate Mantel time only timepiece, circa ?
The is an 8-day time only French mantel "clock". It has a slate case with
marble corner trim. The timepiece has an enamel dial and a small round movement
with a non-jeweled Brocot escapement, thick beveled glass, heavy brass bazel, and a
fancy brass "backdoor" There is no maker's name on the case or the
movement, and only a partly readable name on the face. but it appears to be a
French design.
The pictures show the timepiece before, during, and after restoration. The movement
has been cleaned and some bent parts of the Brocot escapement "reformed"
and it is now running just fine. The case parts were glued together with Liquid
Nails, and the missing marble parts filled in with plaster and sent out to a
professional artist to recreate a faux marble effect to match the original.
I would like to find out who made the clock and movement and about how old it is. I
have been told that "The name on the dial is most likely the name of the
retailer that sold the clock, not the maker, and the city in which his business was
located". If you have, or have seen, a clock like this, I would love to hear
from you.
