W. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Eunomia wall clock, circa 1881-1882
This is an 8-day time and strike wall clock made by W. L. Gilbert Clock Co.,
Winsted, Conn. I beleive this clock is probably all original. It has been in the
same family for at least four generations. The lower trim piece (see simulation
picture 3) has been lost.
This clock has several interesting features that may not be obvious to the casual
observer. The most visible feature is the patented nickel-plated gong base which is
user adjustable by a small external locking device. Close examination of the last
three pictures reveal three less obvious features: the crutch is attached to the
pendulum leader in a somewhat unusual way, a centrifugal governor with felt-faced
brake pads replaces the more common "fan" governor, and finally, the
strike count wheel, although not directly coupled to the main wheel, is attached to
a hub on the main arbor (typically the count wheel is attached to a hub on the
movement plate).
The movement was cleaned and several bushings installed as needed. The case was
left "as is". The clock runs well and has a pleasant strike tone now that
it has a new leather hammer tip.
