H. Endler Co. Vienna Regulator,
c. 1884
This clock is an 8-day time and strike [hour and
half-hour] weight driven Vienna Regulator with
seconds bit. The mark on the movement indicates
that it was made by H. Endler & Co., one of
the so-called Freiburger regulator factories. H.
Endler Co. was founded in 1865 and reportedly went bankrupt
about 1893 and folded into a merger with Gustav Becker in 1899. Based on the movement serial number, this clock was likely made in 1884. More recent dates on the back
of the dial are likely dates when the clock was
serviced.
I purchased this clock at a local estate auction
in June 2007. The clock required cleaning and
minor adjustment but is in good running condition
with little sign of wear. The two lower finials
are missing, there are some small dings in the
pendulum and one of the weights. The case is
"as received" and is very
beautiful.
One curious thing about this clock is that the
seconds bit makes a full revolution in only about
45 seconds. This unusual behavior is the result
of a 30-tooth escape wheel combined with an 80
BPM pendulum.
"As to the so-called seconds dial not
being 60 to the minute, this was especially
common to these German Vienna-style
'regulators.' It also had a calming
effect, when assumed to be a 60s/m indicator, on
patients whose pulse was being taken. Now and
then one of the better G makers would state that
THEIRS showed true seconds." [NAWCC message
board member Zepernick] Thanks.
This is the first Vienna Regulator in my
otherwise mostly American collection. Although I
repair American clocks all the time, I was a bit
apprehensive about taking on a Vienna, having
never seen one before. The movement is quite well
made and relatively easy to service - a lot
simpler than many American mantel clocks with
count wheel strike mechanisms.
Thanks to all on the NAWCC
message board who contributed information about
this clock.
