Elgin 8-day Wag-On-The-Wall "Bim-Bam", Germany mid
20th century.
This is a large weight driven 8-day "Wag-On-The-Wall" clock with
three-hammer Bim-Bam strike on the hour and the half. The brass pull-up movement is
branded Elgin Clock Division, Elgin National Watch Co. The case is stamped
made in Germany. There is a hand written number P/878. I believe the Elgin National
Watch Co. closed in 1964. I would guess that this clock, being stamped
"Germany" and not "West Germany" would place it before
WWII, however the dimpled plates are more indicative of the 1960's and
beyond.
The movement appears to be essentially the same as a Hermle 241-030 and was
probably made for the Elgin National Clock Co. The movement has a deadbeat
escapement with Vulliamy pallets and is generally well made. As received, the clock
was filthy and an improperly installed center bushing had come loose. One
additional bushing was required and a lot of cleaning. Some of the lacquering on
the brass movement plates is scratched or missing. There is some crazing of varnish
or shellac. The face is made from several parts held by small wood screws to the
heavy wood backing. The pendulum stick is solid brass. The pendulum bob has a brass
front and steel back with an adjusting nut at the bottom and is very light weight.
The 4.6 lbs. weights are brass-plated steel shells with cast iron inserts.
